Broadside catalogue with U.S. and English law books listed in triple columns; three horizontal fold lines, remnants of wax seal to head and foot ; prices added in manuscript to 23 titles (other titles do not have prices) ; verso has a long manuscript message from the bookseller, mailing addresses and a Charleston post mark ; toning, minor wear and browning to edges.
Item description from vendor's accompanying document: This catalogue was mailed to a Gregory Yale, Esq., of Jacksonville, Florida in response to a request for South Carolina reporters. The dealer replied with this list and added prices to the appropriate reporters. The message, signed "M'Carter & Allen" is quite interesting. It appears that Mr. Yale was working on a case involving 'negra property.' After apologizing for the high price and scarcity of South Carolina reports, the bookseller makes the following observation, one that seems to endorse Yale's choice: 'We have always been surprised that the courts in Florida should have depended so much on the New York decisions for her precedents, as there must be so many cases where negra property is in dispute, where the decisions of S. Carolina of North Carolina would be so much more applicable. Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi refer to our decisions, and of course our reports are in considerable demand in each of these states.' The rest of this notes offers interesting observations on the distribution of law books and the nature of legal research in the Antebellum South. One can see why Mr. Yales approached M'Carter and Allen. This company had an impressive range of offerings; their list includes just about every significant Anglo-American law book of the period.
