"Ghana has a mixed record in its treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Ghanian officials have publicly supported an end to violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity, but fail to repeal the law that contributes to discrimination. ... Based on 114 interviews with LGBT people in Accra, Tamale, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, [this report] found that section 104(1)(b) fuels violence against lesbian, bisexual and gender non-conforming women in the home and LGBT people more generallly in communities where they live. The report also found that, homophobic statements by local and national government officials, local traditional elders, and senior religious leaders foment homophobia and in some cases, incite violence. Human Rights Watch calls on the Parliament of Ghana to repeal Section 104(1)(b), and on the government of Ghana to adopt measures to monitor and report on hate speech and to protect LGBT persons from all forms of discrimination, intimidation and violence."--Back cover.
