Summary
On 7 and 8 September 1998, UNIDIR held a private, off-the-record meeting designed to address the needs of policy-makers in their assessment of the nuclear-weapons tests carried out by India and Pakistan in May 1998. There was general agreement that neither India nor Pakistan had enhanced its own security or status, but that the risk of nuclear war in the region was greater. The Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty were still regarded as crucial but endangered. Participants focussed on practical suggestions to reduce the risk of war, save the treaty regimes, and anticipate the effects of the tests on areas of regional tensions, particularly the Middle East.--Publisher's description.
