Summary
"Citizenship in the Arab World Kin, Religion and Nation-State is the fruit of five years of onsite research on citizenship in the eigthteen Arab-majority and Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa. The work blazes a path, describing how sending countries shape receiving countries' nationality laws and how pre-existing conceptions of citizensip affect modern civic policies. The analysis reveals how the Arab world combines different levels of membership (in the kin group, the religious community and the nation-state) to create a multifaceted concept of citizenship. It shows, moreover, that these social and legal expressions of membership are deeply embedded in the local political milieu and are somehow perpetuated by migrants in their new settings." --Book Jacket.
