This paper was originally presented as testimony before the Consumer Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation in February 1986. It presents results of research conducted by the Institute for Civil Justice relevant to the product liability system. It considers five areas of research: (1) trends in civil jury verdicts, particularly as they relate to product liability lawsuits; (2) effects of product liability lawsuits on corporate behavior; (3) public expenditures to process tort liability suits; (4) special problems posed by mass toxic lawsuits; and (5) the use of alternative dispute resolution procedures for resolving tort cases.
