Summary
Header: At a meeting of the Seneca, Cayuga, and Onondaga Indians. Present: Sir William Johnson, Bart., two soldiers, one gentleman, and an interpreter. There were some Oneidas there as well. It was the end of the meeting and Johnson wanted a final word. The Indians had declared themselves neutral, but that was contrary to several public declarations of the past--a breach of faith. However, here was what was expected of neutrals: no hostilities against His Majesty's subjects, don't allow the enemy to pass through your settlements, don't provide any intelligence to the French, but do provide it to the English. Johnson passed over a belt of wampum and said if the rules were broken, the Covenant Chain was broken and they would be considered enemies. The Nations said they would try their best.
