Summary
At Conestoga, Monday, July 31, 1710. The attendants were listed: eight tribal groups, seven nations of Native Americans, the Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania, Charles Gookin, three representatives of the provinces, and three guards. The King of the first nation listed opened the proceedings, interpreted by Indian Harry. The King presented a long series of goals for peace and trade, plus other points for discussion. Maryland was cited as a hostile party. On the Governor's order, the first guard said the Five Nations and others needed to recognize the English ownership of the Susquehanna watershed--those present assented. The representative said the English had acknowledged the Five Nations and others as their very good friends, so the Nations should acknowledge the English as their very good ally because the Queen of Britain would protect her subjects from the French. If the Nations responded, it was not recorded in this document.
