Summary
The Governor of New Jersey and six Council members, three Commissioners of Indian Affairs, two Minisinks, two Senecas, one more native, an interpreter and two assistants were present. The Governor gave belts as he went through the welcoming ceremonies and said he was ready to listen. The Indians came in the afternoon. The Minisinks were pleased to receive the message, but the Seneca representative would treat for them, indicating their subservient relationship. The Seneca speaker said the meeting should be at the Forks of the Delaware, a traditional location. There was a description of a special wampum belt. In two full moons, there would be a large Council at the Forks of the Delaware; the Governor would receive notice of the exact day. August 8 The same people were present. The Governor was agreeable to meeting at the Forks of the Delaware. He pointed out that New Jersey already had set boundaries, so his people were not constantly encroaching on lands to the west. They offered sincere friendship; Native Americans could live safely among them. He urged those who would come to the Council to show good will by bringing along any prisoners in their hands to be returned to their families. He offered wampum belts to confirm his words.
