Summary
Brig. General Forbes speech to the Indian messengers from Boccaloons on the Ohio delivered at his special instance by Governor Denny. Wrapper: Friday 8th of February, 1759. Minutes of Indian Conferences. Header: Thursday the 8th of February 1759, Richard Peters at the request of General Forbes, with the approbation of the Governo, held a conference with the Indians. There was an assortment of tribes, with George Croghan and Andrew Montour present. Peters asked questions to learn where the men were from and why they were there. The visitors had heard that Fort Duquesne was in English hands and that the Delaware, Shawnee, and the English shook hands, so they came to see if it were true. The natives at Pittsburgh had sent five of their number to catch up to the General to see what he planned to do in the spring. They wanted to see the records of the meeting in Pittsburgh and Easton. On Friday, the 9th, more Native Americans had come in the night, so they went over all the points of Thursday again. James Grant had carried the speech of the General. The proceedings of the Easton Council were written down and had been sent all around. The General knew the French told them that the English intended to cheat them out of their land, but the only land would be for a few trading posts. Anyone who fought with the English would receive equipment and be paid. Signed: General Forbes order delivered by James Grant, Lieut. 62d Regiment.
