Summary
On that day, the Chief asked to see all the papers associated with the land dispute; he did not trust Croghan and Montour and wanted to work with the Committee from the Assembly. He told more stories about the history of the dispute, including threats, being dispossessed by the Mingoes, and never being paid for some land. He was willing to sign a deed for the disputed land if his people were paid, but he wanted all the discussions written down and sent to the King. At the end of the document there was a paragraph in large clumsy print that unless he could see the papers, he could not give an answer about the dispute. He chided Johnson for wanting to "do things in the dark."
