Summary
Report of Newcastle, Satacaroyies, and William Laquis taken down by Conrad Weiser, Esq. delivered in Council 1 June 1756. In bad weather, the men struggled to get to the Wyoming area, but finding no one, they pressed on to Tiaogon. There they sent messengers to all the Indians in the area to come in for a Council. The men wanted a very public meeting. Newcastle spoke first, saying an evil spirit had stopped the eyes, ears, and voices of the Delaware and Shawnee--some of you lifted the hatchet against us, but thanks to the Six Nations, peace had been restored. The old treaties of friendship would be renewed. He offered safe passage for those who would go to Philadelphia to do that. All would bury the hatchet in a deep hole, never to be found. The Indians responded; the Delaware said they took hold of the old treaties with both hands and asked for mercy. Three tribal groups spoke together, asking for safe passage to the Wyoming area where they planned to settle. They asked the Governor not to charge them with the evil deeds of the Ohio Indians. The Delaware warned that the French now influenced the actions of the Twightwees. Conrad Weiser signed the document on June 1st, 1756.
