Those present at the October 14, 1741 Council are listed as: The Honourable George Thomas, Esq & Lieutenant Governor; Samuel Preston, Ralph Asheton, Samuel Hasell, Thomas Griffitts, Esqs; [Cacawtawsey?], [Seawyeentis?], Chiefs of the Cayooges, accompanied with some other of the same Nation; Conrad Weiser, Interpreter.
Minutes of the Council meeting of 14th of October, 1741. The notes begin with Governor Thomas inquiring of the Indians, "what was the particular occasion of their coming down hither at this time and whether they had heard any news or other matters of consequence, and if they had, he desires them to communicate it." [Cacawtawsey?] responded and noted that the chiefs of the Six Nations had "last spring agreed to come down some time this summer to see their Brother ... (Mr. Penn) and to receive from him payment for certain lands." [Cacawtawsey?] indicated that the winter had been severe and some perished; the governor of New York provided victuals at Albany. The Governor of Canada had invited all the Nations to make a treaty; some of the chiefs had not yet returned. Governor Thomas replied that he was glad to see them, Mr. Penn was in England, and he would have the goods due ready by the next day. As to news, the governor noted that England had been at war with Spain and there was talk of a war with France. If that happened, he hoped he could count on their "friendship and fidelity to the English." The governor indicated that he would order clothing, provisions, powder, lead, and other goods to be ready the next day. He showed the Board a letter he had received from the Shawnees and Mingoes complaining about the amount of rum brought among them. The Governor said he would investigate.
