Summary
Clause had received a packet of letters, one of which was for Col. Johnson, which he delivered. Claus then launched into a description of John Lidie's "villanous" scheme to buy land in Pennsylvania from the Indians, even though everyone knew only the Penns could buy land from the Indians in Pennsylvania. He told about Lidie getting Indians drunk, giving them money, and then getting them to sign deeds. Col. Johnson explained how wrong that was to one chief who was taken aback. He thought because one group signed, it was fine with all the Six Nations. Claus had also heard several stories about the English that were absolutely untrue, but in his opinion, if the English did not appear soon and in force, the Indians were likely to go with the French.
