Summary
February 13, 1755. Shirley addressed the Council and House of Representatives. Since he last spoke to them, there had been a victory at Louisburg on Cape Breton Island, to be followed soon by an attack on St. John's. Shirley regarded this as the best time to build a fort at Crown Point [south end of Lake Champlain] since from there it was a short march to Montreal. Shirley sketched a glorious path to victory, with a line of forts to keep the French away forever. He asked the Assembly to provision his troops so he could start now.
