Summary
Contemporary copy of the laws established in 1665 by James, Duke of York, for the government of the colony of New York, drawn up by Gov. Richard Nicolls in anticipation of a meeting called by him in February 1665, to bring a more uniform system of government to the towns of the newly created shire of York (now Long Island, Staten Island, and Westchester County). Copy was sent out following the proclamation of the laws at Hempstead; intended recipient has not been identified. Includes printed prologue giving a history of the document. Also included is a portion of an article written by Morton Pennypacker entitled: "The Duke's laws: their antecedents, implications and importance" and excerpted from Anglo-American legal history series. Series 1, no. 9, 1944.
