Summary
Report of a special joint committee of the Massachusetts legislature in response to a petition of Daniel Hammond. Hammond contested that land he purchased in Maine through an agent of the state of Massachusetts was not as described. The timber was not nearly as good as he had been led to believe and he wanted a refund. The Committee concluded that the land agent had not led Hammond astray, and that Hammond had not done investigation on his own, as he should have. The Committee proposed refunding half the value of the sale plus simple interest, in exchange for half the land. An appendix provides financial information related to the purchase. Included is a resolution entitled "Resolves upon the petition of Daniel Hammond." The report is signed at end by Emory Washburn, Amos Abbott, John C. Park, George S. Boutwell, and Moses Newell.
