Summary
On September 23, 2020, the European Commission adopted a Communication on a New Pact on Migration and Asylum which consists of five different legislative proposals and several additional policy proposals. The co-legislators of the European Union (EU), the Council of the European Union (Council), and the European Parliament (EP), reached a provisional political agreement on the legislative proposals on December 20, 2023. A final adoption is expected for April 2024. The political agreement was positively welcomed by the EU institutions but has raised some criticism from civil society. The author presents each of the five legislative proposals that make up the new pact.
