Summary
Petition of trustees of the Ursuline Community of Mount Benedict (including the Bishop of Boston, B. Fenwick), the superior of the convent, and parents and guardians of students to the Massachusetts legislature. The petition indicates that a mob attacked the convent and school during the night of August 11, 1834, drove the nuns and students into the fields, ransacked the facility, and then burned it down. No fire fighters or police intervened. The community had been in the area for many years, paid its taxes, and been quiet neighbors. Since the destruction was not prevented by the appropriate government entities, the petitioners state that the loss should be indemnified by the Commonwealth.
