Note
Memorial addressed to the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives and signed at end as "James Tappan and 63 others." The document is in support of a petition signed by 6000 citizens requesting that the charter of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts be repealed. Reasons Tappan and others give for supporting the repeal of the charter are the Masonic oaths taken by Freemasons. An investigation of the group is requested as "its character as a secret Society acting in connexion [connection] with other like Societies in this and in foreign countries as a government, or empire, distinct from the civil government, claiming the right to administer unlawful oaths, contrary to the laws of God and man, and inconsistent with the obligations of a good citizen, which the Legislature, as the guardians of the public peace, and the public morals, are bound to suppress by constitutional enactments."
