Summary
The Massachusetts Senate Committee on Parishes and Religious Societies reported a bill: An Act declaring and confirming to the pew-holders the property in the Congregational Meeting House in the first parish in Brookline, and authorizes them to raise money by taxing pews, 1834. All persons who owned pews in the meeting house were now a body politic that owned the land, building, etc. The pew owners were liable for assessments on the pews. Unpaid assessments meant the pew was available to be auctioned to the highest bidder. Pews were now part of a personal estate. The bill had to be accepted by the parish to be valid.
