Summary
Report of a Michigan Senate select committee regarding "the memorial of C.C. Walin and other citizens of Berrien county, praying for redress of grievances arising from the location of university lands upon the 'Niles Reserve,' in that county." (Page 1). An issue under discussion is that some persons had settled upon land set aside for the university. As noted, "to the settler who had up to that time reposed confidently in the belief that his rights would ultimately receive protection, either from Congress or the State, the act of 1840 furnished the most signal disappointment, and compelled him immediately to choose between the alternative of purchasing his home upon terms, and at a price dictated by a board of commissioners, from whose decree there was no escape, or of abandoning forever his claim and his fireside." (Page 3).
