The purpose of the meeting "was to discuss a preamble and series of resolutions prepared by a committee appointed at a previous meeting." (Page 1). The preamble notes that the election of Abraham Lincoln as president of the United States was opposed in several states, and that the group wanted to express their principles. The resolutions affirm the "tenor and meaning" of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, indicate that the Union should be preserved and that the state militia should be made available to the federal government, and related topics.
