Summary
December 18, 1823 petition of Susannah Price, by her mother and next friend, Mary Webb, which sought help in fighting allegations. Along with testimonials on her virtue, this petition sought copies of the allegations against her, as well as the petitions of her husband and father-in-law, which were previously presented to the legislature.
Note
"That Thomas Price, of Wake county, the father of Washington Price, applied to him three times to give a certificate of her being a girl of bad character, and loose and depraved morals, and, endeavored to prevail on him to give such a certificate, that he might get her divorced from his son Washington; which certificate he, Merritt, refused to give, he stating to Mr. Price (as he told this deponent) 'that he thought she would make his son a good wife,' or words to that effect, and he also said to this deponent, 'that he neither would, nor could, as an honest man, give such a certificate as was required by Mr. Price, as he knew nothing bad of the girl...'"--Statement of John Hollowell.
