Summary
Consists chiefly of correspondence between Jonathan Meredith, Commissioner from the state of Maryland, and T.H. Burrowes, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and other Pennsylvania officials. Nathan S. Bemis, Jacob Forwood, Edward Prigg, and Stephen Lewis were citizens of Maryland who were charged in Maryland for kidnapping slaves; they sought refuge in Pennsylvania. Meredith sought to have them returned to Maryland to "preserve the rights of Slaveholders and cherish good will between the two States." (Page 4)
