Summary
Report of Maryland Attorney General Brent to Maryland Governor E. Louis Lowe about the Christiana treason trials in the Philadelphia Circuit Court, which originated with the murder of Edward Gorsuch of Maryland who was involved in returning a fugitive enslaved person. The attorney general went to Philadelphia as counsel for the State of Maryland. The report indicates that there was much favoritism of persons and actions against conviction. The Attorney General also note, "It remains to be seen whether the State of Maryland is powerless to protect her citizens, when the authorities of a sister State fail in their duty honestly to execute the obligations of the Federal Constitution, or mock us with the forms of a delusive trial, and when a Judge of the United Slates Supreme Court has solemnly decided that we can obtain no Justice in the Federal Courts, but must go before the local courts and local juries of the non-slave-holding States, for that redress which it would now be a mockery to ask for." The report is signed by Robert J. Brent, Baltimore, Md., December 22, 1851.
