Summary
West Publishing Co., which started as John B. West & Co. in 1876 and reigned in the US legal publishing industry in the 20th century, put an end to its existence in 1996. This book introduces the Company's publications, such as the National Reporter System, American Digest System, and United States Code Annotated. In addition, it deals with copyright litigations. In 1834, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the opinion itself was public domain. However, competition between law publishers outside the market developed as copyright litigations on case reports. Those disputes continued even after case reports were digitized. A typical example is the litigation between West and Mead (LEXIS). After the litigation, the publishing industry was drastically reorganized on a global scale, probably because of digitization of information and the formation of EU, with LEXIS being acquired by Reed Elsevier (now RELX Group) in 1994 to become LexisNexis, and West Publishing Co. being acquired by Thomson (now Thomson Reuters) in 1996.
