Summary
February 15, 1857 report of the Committee on Federal Relations to the California Assembly on the joint resolution regarding the Pacific and Atlantic Railroad, and a railroad from the Mississippi Valley to California. The Committee concludes, "We are not wont to be boastful, but maintain that California has advanced prosperity in every portion of the country and contributed munificently to the treasuries of the world; and that within her soil are yet hundreds of millions ready to be gathered, and to float away, enriching others, not ourselves. Her inexhaustible mines of gold must continue to attract mankind, but will not serve to check our growing misfortunes until we are more nearly allied by a grand highway to States which are now only our distant kindred." The report is signed by James O'Neill, chairman.
