Summary
1844 memorial of Convention of Colleges, which requested an appropriation from the Literary Fund to establish a separate fund exclusively for the support of colleges. Also included were supporting information and financial statements. The memorial is signed by representatives from Randolph Macon College, Hampden Sydney College, Medical Department of Hampden Sydney College at Richmond, Washington College, William & Mary College, Henry and Emory College, and Richmond College.
Note
"The trustees and authorities of the several colleges in the state of Virginia, impressed with the importance of these institutions to the educational interests of the country, and convinced of the justness of their claims to the countenance and support of the general assembly, met in convention by their respective delegations, in the city of Richmond, on Thursday the 4th day of January 1844, for the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of making a joint application to your honourable body, for the extension to them of such pecuniary aid, as in your judgment may be afforded without detriment to the public welfare."--Page 1.
