Summary
Defamation: a lawyer's guide analyzes libel and slander laws and explores how they apply to public figures, limited public figures, and private persons. This treatise examines both the accuser's and the victim's side of the defamation issue--ambiguities in Supreme Court decision in Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc.; American Law Institute's interpretation of impact of Gertz on common law of defamation; how Supreme Court decisions in Harte-Hanks Communications, Inc. v. Connaughton and Milkovich v. Lorain Journal Company have liberalized restrictions on plaintiffs; and how the Supreme Court has relaxed defamation plaintiff's burden in public-interest cases and enhanced plaintiff's opportunities for redress. Highlights of each year's cumulative supplement include recent noteworthy cases from all jurisdictions.
