Drones have garnered recent global headlines, yet these unmanned aircraft (UA), also known as unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs), have been around since 1849, when an Austrian balloon, an unmanned aerial vehicle, filled with explosives was used to attack Venice, Italy. In addition to military use, drones are used for consumer or commercial purposes, by local police departments and government agencies "for disaster relief, border surveillance and wildfire fighting," and by corporations for inspecting pipelines and by farm owners for spraying pesticides over cropland. Also of course are the "unsavory" uses of drones--tracking people, closing down facilities, even assassination.
