Summary
1759-1763 Seven documents dealing with the ability of the Narragansett tribe to sell tribal lands. Of note, the then sachem, Thomas Ninigret, sought repeal of an act for limiting the sale of lands by tribe in order to pay his debts. After this was granted, the tribe filed a petition challenging this repeal of the sanction against the sale of land by the Indians (document 1), as well as other relevant documents on both sides (2-5). Ultimately there was petition for an order to sell lands to satisfy debts (6), and a commission's report on the progress of the sale (7).
