Call Number Systems and Locations in the Law Library

The Library's collections are divided as follows: international law and books in Anglo-American law and in non-legal subjects acquired since 1978 are classified using the Library of Congress system (JX, KZ; KD, KE, KF), comparative and non-Anglo-American foreign materials are classified using the Schiller system (Fr, Sp.Mex, Comp), and miscellaneous materials such as Anglo-American periodicals, older treatises, American reports, etc., are classified using the Hicks system (P, T, and R, respectively).

In all cases, the Pegasus record for a title tells you where it is located. Generally speaking, international law materials are on the 2nd floor, books in Anglo-American law and in non-legal subjects acquired since 1978 are on the 4th floor, comparative and non-Anglo-American foreign materials are in the cellar, bound American periodicals are in the cellar or are retrievable from offsite storage, older treatises are retrievable from offsite storage, and American reports are distributed amongst the 3rd and 4th floors and the cellar.

Please note that all unbound issues of current periodicals except Japanese and Korean are shelved in the Reserve Reading Room on the 3rd floor. Unbound issues of current Japanese and Korean periodicals are on the 2nd floor.
